FAQ
Do I need to have STD testing?

If you’re sexually active, you should have STD screenings regularly as a part of your preventive care. If you’ve had unprotected sex, think you were exposed to an STD, shared IV needles, or have symptoms of an STD, make an appointment for STD testing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published detailed guidelines for STD screenings based on gender, age, and other risk factors. It’s a good idea to discuss these recommendations with your medical provider to ensure you’re screened appropriately.

Do STDs have symptoms?

A variety of symptoms might indicate an STD. However, they don’t always have symptoms. Some common symptoms of STDs include:

  • Sores or growths around the genitals, anus, or mouth

  • Skin rashes

  • Painful or burning urination

  • Genital discharge

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the groin area

  • Fever

You may experience the symptoms of an STD soon after you’re exposed to the infection, but some STDs don’t show signs for months, or even years.

How are STDs treated?

Treatment depends on the type of disease and the severity of your condition. Most treatments involve either oral medication, such as antibiotics or antivirals, or topical medication. Some STDs aren’t curable, but treatment and lifestyle changes help you control the disease so it doesn’t cause health complications.
